Welcome to the Water Loss Reduction Homepage

The aim of this website is to provide information and share knowledge on efficient water loss reduction from drinking water supply systems. The website results from a strategic alliance in the context of a public-private partnership between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German International Cooperation) and VAG Armaturen GmbH, one of the world's leading manufacturers of specialised valve solutions.

One of the summit outputs of the 5th World Water Forum held in Istanbul in March 2009 was the Istanbul Water Consensus, which recognises access to safe drinking water as a 'basic human need'. Customers worldwide expect their water utility to supply drinking water in sufficient quantity, quality and continuity. However, in several regions of the world these global expectations are not yet being fulfilled.

In many cases, leakage from water supply systems represents a major obstruction to achieving this aim. In the light of scarce and further diminishing water resources, extensive water losses are incompatible with the principles of sustainable management. The reasons for water losses are manifold and well-known to practitioners: they are not limited to technical problems only, but may also be of administrative or managerial origin.

Guidelines for water loss reduction

A focus on pressure management

The GIZ-VAG partnership was formed to introduce, promote and support Pressure Management (PM) as a best practice instrument for water loss reduction in selected developing and emerging countries as well as to develop internationally accepted guidelines in order to share knowledge with interested stakeholders worldwide. The guidelines for water loss reduction are now available for download.

You can also directly download the summary for decision-makers here.

Interested in participating?

The success of the water loss reduction project relies on the active participation of water supply professionals throughout the world. If your water utility or institution is interested in participating in one or several of the following project components, we would appreciate to welcome you as our partner.
